Personal Wellness

People often think about wellness in terms of physical health but it is so much more.  Wellness is a holistic integration of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. We need to fuel the body, engage the mind, and nurture the spirit.  It’s about maintaining good health and living life fully.

Wellness encompasses 8 mutually interdependent dimensions: physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, vocational, financial, and environmental.

The current global health crisis has shown how inter-connected these dimensions are. People’s lifestyles have been impacted by safety restrictions, a pervading sense of fear, social disconnection, business closures and job losses.  For each of us, this has meant re-evaluating the importance of previous habitual activities and stepping out of routine.  It also offers us the opportunity to be more mindful of how we self-steward our own wellness and support those we care about.

Each one of us is so unique that it’s impossible to assert any particular balance between the 8 dimensions of wellness.  It is important to note though that neglecting any over time will adversely affect the others, and ultimately one’s health and quality of life. When determining how to balance, we can strive for a ‘personal harmony’ that feels nurturing and authentic to us.

Here’s a few ideas to kick start your wellness focus:

  • Eat more fruit and vegetables, preferably raw or lightly cooked.
  • Drink plenty of pure water, get fresh air and sunlight.
  • Turn of the TV and read a book, do a puzzle, talk to your family, go for a walk, learn a new skill.
  • Remember and be thankful for all the good things in your life, including the seemingly insignificant things.
  • Get rid of mental clutter by asking yourself if the things constantly on your mind are important enough to spend mental energy on.
  • Make something – a cake, painting, garden, vision board.
