Keeping your Vocational Education Training on Track
When you go on a journey it’s a good idea to map out where you are going, plan what you need to take, make sure you will stick to your schedule, and you get to see all the sites along the way. To ensure we stay on track within our vocational education (VET) journey we use session plans.
Trainers find many benefits in using session plans including:
Structured Learning:
Session plans help trainers provide a clear, organised framework for delivering content, ensuring that lessons flow logically and that all learning outcomes are covered. This doesn’t stop you from going a little off track as long as you bring the group safely back to the content being covered. Remember the journey should be fun!
Meeting Competency Requirements:
There’s always someone in the back saying “Are we there yet” – Session plans help you follow the framework of national competency standards. Session plans ensure that the trainer addresses the required performance criteria, knowledge, and skills from the relevant units of competency.
Time Management:
There’s time for a quick stop to check the scenery then it’s back on track. A session plan outlines the timing for each activity, ensuring that the content is covered within the allocated time and that there’s a balance between theory, practical exercises, and discussion.
Consistency:
Isn’t it great when the bus always follows the same route, we don’t want to miss anything. Session plans allow multiple trainers to deliver consistent learning experiences across different groups of learners, ensuring that all students receive the same quality of education, regardless of which trainer delivers the session.
Flexibility and Adaptation:
“Can we just checkout the sites along the way?” While offering structure, session plans also allow flexibility. Trainers can adapt sessions based on the learners’ progress, engagement, or specific needs while still keeping the learning outcomes in focus.
Assessment Preparation:
“Do I have your attention?” Session plans incorporate opportunities for formative and summative assessments, helping trainers observe learner progress and prepare them for final evaluations in line with competency-based assessments.
Engaging Learners:
“Are we having fun?” Session plans help ensure that a variety of activities and teaching methods are incorporated to cater to different learning preferences, this is crucial to cater for the diversity in our VET classrooms.
The journey is over. “let’s do it all again!” Session plans demonstrate that the training organisation is following a systematic approach. Session plans build confidence in the training team that everything is covered, and it reduces the amount of preparation and research required – let’s not re-invent the wheel.
